After qualifying on pole Peter Brock led from the start in the #05 HDT Brock / Perkins car. At the end of lap eight a huge puff of smoke signalled the end of the day for car #05. A bent valve had finished the promising campaign. The lead was taken by the second HDT #25 car driven by John Harvey.

On lap twenty Harvey brought his #25 HDT car into the pits to hand over to his co-driver Phil Brock. However, in what was to become a point of great controversy, Peter Brock re-entered the race in 5th place in the #25 HDT car instead due to a loop hole in the rules relating to ’cross-entering’.
Peter Brock re-gained the lead on lap 48 and he and his co driver Perkins were never challenged again and led for the rest of the day.
The official result was a win to Peter Brock, Perkins and Harvey. Phil Brock did not register a start in the race.
Peter Brock had won his seventh Bathurst.
